If your the teacher. If the pupil trusted you not to tell anyone would you try to help them on your own or consult someone? What would you do? Thanks in advance!

You need to do something. I'd talk to the pupil, and tell them that you have to step in because it's your job to protect students. I'd also tell their parents, they have a right to know, and then leave it in the parents hands but say that I am there to talk to if they need to. Hope this helps!

Go to your school's counselor and ask for their assistance. They can take the student and talk to them and see if they can ge to the source of the student hurting themselves.
Think of it this way, if you say nothing and something happens to that student, you will blame yourself for not stopping it.
The student may be mad at first, but in the long run they will understand that you did it for their own good.
