SANFL set to play footy on Good Friday next season?

In a Twilight or evening match.

If the match is a success with the fans will the AFL consider scheduling a match on Good Friday in 2013?

Are you for or against sport being played on Good Friday?

Although I'm catholic and have my beliefs, I feel the time is right to have footy played on Good friday.

Good on the SANFL, setting the standards once again. But having said that, my catholic up bringing sure has me thinking twice about it.

When I was a kid I hated getting dressed up & being forced to go to Sunday School & Church every week.

Then in my teens I hated that there was no sport on Sundays, but began to appreciate the church run sporting fixtures on Saturdays (cricket & R.L.) and the social interaction and cheap group entertainment that church social clubs provided. We roamed the streets at night on chalk chases, progressive dinners,

had hay rides, movies, 10 pin bowling, guided tours... the pursuits were endless but all 100% safe and low cost. Pubs were closed Sundays so dad was always home & we went fishing in the arvo etc.

Now I respect the church for the power it had for so long to keep society in check as I story after story in the news that I never expected to see as a kid or a teen. Alcohol problems, gambling problems, teenage violence & violence in schools, the staggering divorce rate, single parents, domestic violence and crime rates soaring while every restraint imposed by religion has been gradually stripped away as politicians take over the power and big business the $$$$.

Anzac Day has half capitulated and Christmas trivialised but surely we can stop the rot and keep 2 and a half days a year, if nothing else, in remembrance of a clean, decent, moral and surprisingly honest society which we have destroyed ?

I hope good S.A. sense prevails and the idea is canned, and that it doesn't make it to the AFL agenda either, but I am realistic enough to realise that $$$ now rule and sport to some has become a religeon.

Ah....the price of democracy and freedom of choice ?

I've been brought up as a devout Catholic, and I intend to maintain that for the rest of my life.

Good Friday is intended to be a day of mourning and sorrow for the death of Jesus. Then again, I'm a firm believer that secular society should not be influenced by religious figures and that the two should be kept separate.

Hence; It really doesn't fuss me. The players don't run out their aiming to disrespect Christians. If you don't like the footy being on a Good Friday, then don't watch it. Simple as that.

I'd vote to have games on Good Friday, as it's the most boring day of the year, not everyone is religious, it means nothing to me, so people like myself would love the footy to be on in the arvo, they play footy on Anzac Day and in my view that day is more sacred to me.

Plenty of country leagues already play on good friday, the AFL should follow.

Although all points are valid ^

I feel that you have to think of players as well, some players might be very religious and want to spend Good Friday morning the death of THIER Saviour (not everybody's, even tho I am a catholic) so that I see as a valid reason why not to play AFL on Goid Friday

    So I am against it

I'm a catholic, but I feel people should be able to have something to do on Good Friday. The whole country shouldn't have to follow that if they don't please. Even a lot of catholics think it's a good idea to have footy on Good Friday.

it has been stated, good friday is the most boring day of the year, and not everyone is religious, may I also point out i have no interest whatsoever in horse racing yet i am given a public holiday in melbourne on melbourne cup day. the christian religion of which australia is supposedly part has but two days a year in which religion is paramount. good friday and christmas day, and now they are under attack. surely 2 days out of 365 for observance of the christian religion is not asking too much, leave the status quo as it is, and do whatever you wish on the other 363

With all due respect to Sandiee, those kind of views went out in the 1960's.

AFL, like anything, shopping for example....is a form of entertainment. When we get off work, besides resting, we usually look for entertainment. There is plenty of time for those who do elect to worship in the AM...to also look for entertainment later.

It's like shopping on Sunday's, 6 PM closing, playing sports on Sunday (remember, no sports on Sunday's...Test matches had the mandatory rest day)...those things have all passed.
