1999 Chrysler 3.2, front wheel dr..transmission or differential problem?

Took the kids to school, and went to back out, and the car wouldn't move, so I gave it a little gas, and it clunked hard and started rolling..put it in drive and it growled like crazy for about 15 feet. Towed it home, put it on jacks, the wheels will turn in drive but makes horrible grinding sound coming from the front differential (at least it looks like a diff) pulled the plug on the side and noise is definitely loader..funny thing is, the noise gets quieter when you turn the traction control off..can anyone tell me if they've experienced this with this type of car, or give me a hint on what to do..it only has 80,000 miles, and other then this meltdown it runs great, and I really need it for transportation to work and kids school. Thanks.

You need to make sure you have adequate air in your tires and tire sizes are the same on the front end. Having either or both uneven on the front end can cause this to happen. Also, have someone inspect your wheel bearings. The sound and symptoms you're describing is also made by bad wheel bearings.

    Good luck :-)

for a small little car that is a lot of miles, I know from experience the noise you are describing is not good, and its likely going to get expensive to repair. I tried to do a general search by typing in

" pt cruiser grinding noise ?" and actually found several references, but nothing solid to report like a YUREKA MOMNENT. I also went to carcomplaints.com which has complaints from other car owners that are more pinpoint and year specific. As a guess you are looking at an internal Transaxle/transmission problem which is not going to be cheap, and the car is likely to be down for most of the week. I think you will need to borrow or rent a car during that time, possibly even find a shop with a loaner that will fit your needs.

I had to interchange the surprising front wheel bearing assembly on our 'ninety Dynasty LE 3.3 at one hundred forty five,000. The left factor become ok, parked the vehicle some 3 hundred and sixty 5 days later after a fender bender and does not bypass inspection.
