What's it going to take to fix this (Ford f-150 steering column)?

I have a 1995 Ford pickup with a problem in the steering column. I think somebody has used the steering wheel to pull themself up into the cab, and something is broken. The steering still works fine, but the wheel itself is not held in place like it should be. It will move about an inch in any direction. I'm wondering how common this is, and what it takes to fix it.

chevrolet had this problem with its tilt steering and so did some fords, If yours has the tilt steering its just internal wear if it is not interfering with the Key switch too, your lucky, mine did and Unless the steering column was in the exact right position when the car was started as soon as you changed into any gear, it turned itself off. I know from experience some people have enough patience and will take a steering column apart and figure out whats wrong if possible and fix it. And some mechanics will tell you to replace the colunm which makes more sense, because there are millions of them out there used that will interchange just fine. Unless there is something dangerous or you want a good steering column , by all means do what you think is best. I found its best to be careful with the plastic plug ins as sometimes you may have to change on off the old column. Those connectors are like plugs, figure out how it works and unplug them, it may make your job easier later on.

While not a real common occurrence it does happen in the 1992-1996 models. Sadly the easiest and cheapest fix is to get a complete column from wrecked truck, preferably with rear damage, not front.

it may well be plenty much less complicated to alter the full guidance column then fooling around with the swap. basically get the full works from a junk backyard and alter it. or you need to %. up a haynes e book at vehicle zone, it shows you the thank you to alter the swap.

hey johnny ! if it has tilt steering then maybe the knuckle is worn in the steering shaft.
