    We can determine the change in the total surface energy by knowing the surface tension of the water. Assuming 25 degC, the surface tension of water is 71.97 dyn/cm = 71.97mN/m

    The initial surface energy is 4pi(.5mm)^2 * (71.97 mN/m) = 2.261*10^-4 mJ

    The total volume of the smaller drops must equal that of the larger drop.

    (.5mm)^3 = 64*r^3 --> r = .125mm

    The new total surface energy is:

    64*(4pi)*(.125mm)^2 * (71.97 mN/m) = 9.044*10^-4 mJ

    This represents an energy difference (work required) of 6.783*10^-4 mJ
