ubuntu 11.10 on usb drive wont install?

it goes to a screen that says SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 Copyright (C) 1994-2011 H. Peter Anvin et al

and then it wont do anything i cant type theres no mouse nothing this is on an hp pavilion dm 1165 dx that does not have another os on it i'm a linux noob so i dont know much about it and i used universal usb installer to put ubuntu on the usb drive.

    I suggest you burn it to a dvd and try to boot from that. USB behavior is sometimes unpredictable.

    try putting it on usb again or burning it on a CD.

    if it didnt work try another distro like Linux mint , Kubuntu , OpenSuse , Fedora ,... I have heard Ubuntu incompatibility with HP Pavilion.
