How do I cover up an exit sign with Gimp?

I've got a photo with an exit sign over the door in the background. I'd like to remove the sign. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do such a thing using GIMP software?

Update:

Where is the resynthesizer tool? What does it look like?

you can use the Clone tool and the heal tool, like others pointed out, but the Resynthesizer plugin works really well too.

I've been having trouble with it though because i had a few PC issues but it works quite well in some situations and in others the clone and heal tools work better.

for the sign i would try the Resynthesizer and the others to perfect it.

You MIGHT be able to remove it using the clone stamp tool, and a few other duplication methods, but honestly tasks like this are a one-off thing. Use bits of the existing door to cover up the sign. Try watching this video to see if it helps:

    Good luck.
