Upbringing in Pride and Prejudice?

I don't get the whole concept of upbringing in Pride and Prejudice. Could someone please explain this concept to me? I mean is it raising their girls in order to marrying them off? I am at a total loss! Thanks!!

In the story, the estate was entailed. This means that when the father died, the estate would be inherited by his nearest male relative, Mr. Collins. The girls would then be left without a home, unless they married. The mother wants to "marry them off" because she wants them to be cared for in the event of their father's death. Women in this time were just beginning to get the same rights as men. They could not yet vote, own property or for the most part have a job. Even Jane Austin would have been looked down upon because she was a female writer. She questioned a lot of these kinds of things, but the process of gaining these rights took time. The culture of this time period is much different that of today.

They wanted their daughters to marry no matter what because the fathers estate, money, and pretty much everything goes to the son. And since Elizabeth's family didn't have a boy that might take care of the 6 Miss Bennett's, marrying was the only sure way they would be taken care of when their father died.

Yes, if you had a daughter your main aim in life was to see her 'suitably' married, to a man with a good income, house, property etc. Woman had very little place in society other than as wives.

girls were treated as property back then; having a girl was bad luck
