just got a senior apartment, very tiny, need tips?
for comfortable living in very tight quarters. Only one closet for storage, I love the ease of not taking care of a big home but wonder how to find more storage for necessary things with out having to pay for and hire a storage spacel. I have gotten rid of many things but still feel the place is crowded and I hate the cluttered look. ALso any decorating tips to make small spaces look larger? The walls are a nice light neutral off white so I dont have to worry about that,, What else to make the area look more spacious? Thanks for any and all ideas,...

Valerie - Mirrors - right across from your windows - will reflect the light and make a room appear larger.
If you can afford the vinyl storage boxes - buy a couple of the flat type - they slide nicely under the couch and will also - sit up sideways behind your couch. Under the bed too.
I decorate mostly with pictures (in my case they are family pictures) - plaques and quotes - our marriage license with a quote and a picture of us. Clocks too. I love looking at my ancestors and my family - hanging on our walls. We use to collect picture frames - now all of our wall space is covered with pictures and the above mentioned.
I also decorate with vines and twinkle lights - from the craft store. I have most of my collectible knickknack's on shelves - that are set quite high on the wall - at least above my head.
Hope this helps.
Wish I could show you a picture.
Hope you will come to enjoy your place.

I have a small senior apartment. I have been getting rid of my things little by little. You might want to get rid of large bulky furniture and buy some that fits your smaller space. You can make a room look larger with a large mirror or have the entire wall mirrored. Make sure you dont have dark furniture and use glass top tables to draw attention from the furniture. Getting light colored furniture makes a difference. No bulky or over-stuffed chairs. Get a bistro table with two chairs or a small 3x3 dinette rather than a dining table. It takes months or even years to change or sell everything.
Leave the windows with no blinds at all if you have a good view. It looks less claustrophobic with no drapes or curtains to cover windows. My bedroom is so small, that I have the computer desk and TV in there and with a queen bed there is no room for a dresser, so I put the dresser inside the closet.

You need to get rid of everything you won't need. What you need is a small skillet, a small saucepan, a small plate or 2, a couple spoons, forks, etc. You're never going to hold a large gathering or need more yourself. Same with the bath room-a regular size shampoo, etc-no big bundles, 2 towels and so on. You don't need extras for anything. Do not pay for more storage for things that someone else can be enjoying.
Give away or sell all furniture and sentimental items. If you don't have room for a couch and coffee table, then have a couple of recliners or rockers with small tables beside them. No big lamps- trade them for smaller models. You're not going to miss anything. This is a whole new phase. Read and recycle magazines or papers immediately. Don't allow piles of clutter. Closets-only for a few outfits and shoes that are practical-It shouldn't look cramped. The whole place should appear cozy and never cramped as if it's spacious. If not, you still need to get rid of more. Don't be a slave to your belongings.

I also live in a very small house. I use a chest for a coffee table. I keep books, blankets and emergency lights in it. I also have an end table that has a top that comes off. That means the inside of it can be filled with things.
I also use the space under my bed for storage. Like some of the other answers state, you'll do yourself a favor if you get rid of things you don't use or seldom use. I bet you won't even miss them.
Enjoy your new place. And I agree, it's really nice not having to clean and keep up a big house.

lol, your picture looks like you're 18 and you're a senior citizen?
Ok so I've found that anything white makes the room look larger. If you have boxes then put a piece of furniture over them or planks of wood and then cover it with a sheet or some piece of material that has flowers on it or blends in with your color scheme, in other words hide your stuff yet make working space on top of it. Light colored curtains are ok too. Sometimes, like here, all you're offered are blinds and blinds makes it look like you have more space (however with blinds you can't cover your windows for the winter to keep the cold out). Also, I had a few lamps that had large shades. Perhaps if you buy small lamps with not so wide shades the place will look larger.

I find that the space under my bed is a real plus...also, I store overflow kitchen items in the dishwasher since I never use it! When putting up photos and art, try to stick to smaller groupings instead of huge frame work. Mirrors also help to make a room look larger. Free-standing cupboards and shelf/bookcase units also make good storage.
It really is a challenge to have to keep downsizing one's possessions, isn't it?

You can use smaller appliances in the kitchen. Opt for smaller, light colored furnishings.
