Should we invade Samalia to prevent their piracy? not a good idea, better to arm our ships.?

But for the people who gave me flak i few months ago, when I suggested it was logical to arm merchant ships, but the British PM Cameron has announced he will arm British flag vessels in the Indian ocean.

why did it take so long to take this step?

Update:

No one suggested that all Somalis are pirates, some must be intelligent and law abiding but there is no government and the pirates are out of control.

army merchant ships might well be the answer. Good move by the UK government.

Insurance and legal worries about whether you CAN arm these ships are the main complication. Merchants have started adding Private Security Contractor teams on board to deter pirate attacks, and these have been effective in reducing piracy.

The only way to solve piracy is for Somalia to set up a government and take control of their territory, but that's not going to happen for awhile. Invading it isn't going to solve anything.

With that said, it's easy for the UK (and the US) to just say they are going to arm or allow arms onto their merchants. These two nations are meaningless in terms of number of flagged-ships they have.

It's the countries where all the ships are flagged out of that really have problems.

not all somalis are pirates. invading a country (not necessarily somalia as an example) for something that quite a few commit, and with many others helpless to do anything, is like destroying your local police station (depends on the country being invaded) or a community because a perp committed a crime in that location. not to mention the chaos that comes with invasions.

Why do you only care about Somali pirates? Only a tiny fraction of the piracy that goes on in the world takes place off the Somali coast?

the area is that the pirates aren't any further attempting to board the deliver till that's disabled. they are firing on the deliver from a distance. there became an American deliver rescued the day handed by -- the deliver workers called the Coast preserve, the Coast preserve mandatory help and called the military, and the deliver became rescued yet merely after it had gained huge harm. possibly if all ships had some variety of lengthy determination capturing skill or bombing variety skill (for sure a small bomb), they could safeguard themselves from the pirates attacking their ships. good question -- i'd be irritating to confirm each and each of the solutions.

Invading isn't going to solve anything at all. Remember in 1993 when two Black Hawk helicopters went down and 18 American soldiers were killed in that raid? No way we going to do that again.
