Is it safe to use a hair dryer during a thunderstorm?
I just took a shower. I really want to blow dry it (and straighten it later). Would it be safe? There are some pretty bad thunderstorms coming but it hasn't started raining here yet. I saw a flash of lightning a few minutes ago, but it wasn't really a strike. It hasn't even thundered yet. My curling mousse is at my dad's house so blowing out my hair is pretty much my only option. It would take me about 25 minutes...is it safe? I don't want to risk my life or anything but I want my hair to look nice lol. Thanks!

The safest thing to do is not to use ANY electrical appliance when there's a thunderstorm in the area, and for 30 minutes after the last thunder you hear. (Lightning can strike as far as 20-25 miles from a storm!) Also, shut down and unplug your computer and any other devices which have computers in them, (that's almost everything these days!), when there's thunder in the area. For the same reason, it is not safe to take a bath or shower when there's lightning within 20-25 miles!
For now, just towel dry your hair and worry about it after the storm has passed.
P.S.: A GFI will NOT protect you from lightning! That is NOT it's purpose - It only senses if there is leakage between the hot (black) wire and ground. It cannot protect you from lightning!

its not safe to use any electric in a storm, quickly dry as much as you can before the other signs get worse, i would not say its good for you to do it for the whole 25 minutes if they increase, but you never know it may blow over :)

Is the outlet or the dryer protected by a GFI switch or receptacle then you'll be fine.
