Why do I keep crying about the past?

Since the weekend, great memories from a few years ago suddenly kept circling my head and all these memories came back like never throughout all these years and just kept wishing I could relive them again. That was before I started to become very unhappy. Is this normal? Ive been crying a lot lately and just immersed with these memories so much, Ive been down lately. What can I do? I've tried to tell myself to look forward but the one of the happiest times of my life is just so hard to put down.

There's nothing wrong with memories and sometimes everyone relives memories. It's how we learn to get better at things we do.It's when the memories get so wrapped up into the present moment that it causes a dysfunctional mind set and can cause you major sadness and depression in the only moment that is real, the present moment.

The past is borrowed from this now moment and has no power unless you want to give it power and then you are taking away from your life in this only real moment. The future is also borrowed from the now and will only cause you stress and anxiety if you are in the future , Now.

What you can do is conscious deep breathing from the diaphragm to bring yourself into the present moment. Breath has no form and will automatically put you into the present moment.

You can also do thought gaps. Have gaps between your thinking. Think awhile and then be still, quiet your mind, and feel the awareness of this present moment. Do this as much as it takes to calm your busy mind from taking you back into the past.

Most people's present moment is all caught up in the past and future. Most people identify totally with things. Who they are is determined , so they think, by what things they have or don't have. Most people have been conditioned this way all their lives and so it's hard to get into the present moment for most . People are so mind identified that they think they are their thoughts.

Once you become aware of the space that creates the thoughts you become the watcher of your thoughts instead of being your thoughts. You start using your mind instead of your mind using you. It all starts by putting yourself into the present moment and reminding yourself as much as possible to keep getting into the present moment.

Once you get into the present moment you will see the real joy, enthusiasm , and acceptance that is the real you. Generations and generations of people have been fooled by their own mind. They think they are whatever thoughts they think. It's tough to get unconditioned from your thoughts being who you are since that conditioning is deep into every cell of your body. But when you get into the present moment you will begin to become the watcher of your thoughts instead of being them and you will be able to control your life better.

There is only this moment and there will always just be, this moment.

Perfectly normal, especially nowadays when things suck all over the world for honest, hardworking people who have done nothing wrong to contribute to the deterioration of their society or culture. If there aren't any good things happening to you NOW, then your mind wanders back to good things that have happened in the past. BUT: you cannot relive those good times of the past, THEY ARE GONE FOREVER: they are only memories now, and this can make for depressed feelings when today stinks, and tomorrow doesn't look any better. Two things you CANNOT DO: 1) give up on life today, withdraw from society, and "live" in the past (then, you will have no reason to wake up in the morning). 2) Start rehashing all of the BAD TIMES you've experienced in life as well as the good ones (this will make you very bitter and angy, and it will show). You gotta think: "I'm not nearly as bad off as alot of other people in the world" (which is very true), and you just keep pushing on, day to day, until something nice happens once again (and you must savor that moment AS IT IS HAPPENING). Keep on truckin'.....

There is a cure. Keep busy, and stay with other people as much as possible.

Exercise, or work hard, this will give you less time to think.

Join a common interest group, go to all their meetings, after a time, you will notice that you are no longer plagued by thoughts of the past, oh so excellent, events.

You may need help with thought control, and this is difficult to obtain.
