Is my road bike rim safe to ride on with a cracked / split rim ? pls read description?
It is not a conventional crack and is on the outside of the rim (not around a spoke) It has moved on the join of the rim and so there is a step on the rim, where it should obviously be smooth, all having hit some debris in the road. So it is not a crack as such. when i inspected the wheel on the inside, there were lots of pieces of aluminium, from the joining part (kind of like weld excess being broken off) I have found this very difficult to explain, but any help would be sooo appreciated, Cheers, Maz
Ok, safe is maybe not the best word..... will it fail if i hit another bump / debris when im 60 miles from home ? this is what i want to avoid, i hate those walks and thumbing for a lift!

You might get away with it but you shouldn't take unnecessary risks when it comes to personal safety. If the wheel fails when you're on a main road you might end up under the wheels of a truck so why take a chance? A new wheel isn't all that expensive.

Hey M,
I'll start by saying that cycling is inherently dangerous. ANY condition on a bicycle that can affect safety is cause for concern.
A crack in a rim is right on up there safety-wise. The reason? You have 4 different "systems" on your bike that can be catastrophically affected if/when your rim gives out, Your brakes, your wheel, your tire, your steering...
So you can see where having to stick out your thumb to hitch a ride might be the very least of your problems.
My advise? STOP RIDING IT NOW! And take the bike to a reputable shop and have them go over it completely, I'd be willing to bet there's probably a few more issues then just a cracked rim.

No, your wheel is not safe to ride on. Especially if it is a front wheel. Another bump could cause the rim to separate completely and collapse. I am well over 40 years old and have seen plenty of bad accidents caused by riding on defective equipment. You are on borrowed time if you continue to use this wheel

Take it to a bike shop and have them look at, more than likely you will have to replace the rim.
If replacing the wheel is worth more than the bike (happened to me once when I was given one of those crap walmart bikes when I was 15) get a new bike. You can find a lot of quality used bikes for sale that will last a whole lot longer, and better.

So what's your question? it truly is truly no longer sparkling you're asking one. in case you desire rims, get them, and make investments interior the locks for the edges so as that they are able to't be bumped off without the particular device. you additionally can upload coverage on your coverage to hide theft in case you will like. The very extreme end alarm structures do no longer make pointless noise, yet will web page you if somebody is messing with your motor vehicle.

It sure as hell isn't going to fix itself. Get that thumb warmed up or buy a new wheel. Choice is yours.

you might be thumbing for an ambulance
especially if it is the front
"all having hit some debris in the road."

Anyone who is around my age (40+) will laugh their heads off at this question.
Why? Because we used to ride around the streets on any old lump of cr@p no matter what condition it was in, there was no brakes, no tyre tread, no helmets or gloves, ripped saddles, (If there was one!) chains that were barely hanging on and don't even think about asking if we had lights.lol
Seriously, this is nothing compared to the utter junk we used to absolutely fly down steep hills hoping there would be a bush at the bottom instead of a wall to stop us.
Is this safe? It's beyond safe.
