Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (Happy weekend Train Ticket from Germany)?

Hi,

Understand that I could purchase this ticket and travel free on any local train (no Intercity Express) throughout germany either on Sat or Sun. But could I also use the ticket on the buses and tram?? Example: From my hotel, I take the local tram to Frankfurt train station, then the local train to Wurzburg and then their local tram to the Residenz? Thanks in advance.

In Frankfurt (Hesse) -that belongs to the transport association RMV- you can use this ticket on "Regionalzug"(RE = abb.) that means local trains express

and "S-Bahn" i.e suburban train but NOT on "U-Bahn" = undergroud railway, not on "Straßenbahn" = tram, and not on "Bus" = bus.

But in Würzburg -that belongs to the transport association VVM- you can only use the local train , furthermore Würzburg belongs to Bavaria and they have a special ticket a so called "Bayern-Ticket" price is 21 Euro you can use all you want except Intercity.

Sorry it is very complicated and if I go by train, bus etc. to another city I spend hours to learn how to save money and what is the right ticket and I often made the experience, that the employers of the Deutsche Bahn have the same problem cause the information you get from Deutsche Bahn is very very often completly wrong.

    To find out via Internet.

German Railways / Deutsche Bahn: www.bahn.de. Pick out USA or GB by flag

    or http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml.

On left hand side type in Hamburg TO Residenzplatz, Wurzburg with a date

being a Saturday or Sunday. It can be from Hamburg or any town far fom Wurzburg.

Under the date there are two boxes: "fast connections" and "local connections".

    Tick "local connections". Search.

In savings fare the price is 39 Euros with the remark "partial fare".

Clicking on the filed partial fare, show that "Schönes Wochenende"

is only valid to Würzburg Main Station.

One pays extra for the bus to the Bus Terminus near the Residenz.

The weekend ticket allows use of many buses and trams, but it depends whether the local transport association (Verkehrsverbund) accepts it or not. You can find a list of all the transport associations accepting it here: http://www.bahn.de/p/view/mdb/pv/dbregio/regionale... (PDF, german). It shows that both the Verkehrsverbund Mainfranken (Würzburg) and the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (Frankfurt) seems not really to accept it (see also http://www.vgf-ffm.de/de/tarife-tickets-plaene/fah... ), which means you can use S-Bahn and local trains in these areas but not tram or bus.

Maybe someone from Frankfurt can tell you more.

(Edit: In the first version of this answer I said that Würzburg would accept it for buses but this is wrong.)
