Why are people so vehemently aligned with Edward or Jacob in the Twilight series?
As a person totally ignorant of Twilight, what are the main characteristics of both Edward and Jacob and are these characteristics as mutually exhaustive as their fanbase? I am surprised by the strength with which some people discuss these two. Before (if) I read the books, I am hoping for some insight into their character development.

...One's the hot overly aggressive built dude, the other is sympathetic, mopey and emotional. Basically the bad boy and the sensitive spirit. This is all you need to know to captivate the masses of teenage girls and gay guys worldwide. It isn't complicated.

Ok, I should put a caveat... I hate the books, and the movies are mediocre in my opinion. However, I think it's an interesting story line which could've been portrayed much better...
The story has a central theme: forbidden love. In other words, what happens when you fall in love with the wrong person? Edward is the wrong person... the one she loves knowing she shouldn't. Jacob is the good friend... the one she cares about, but can never love to the same degree.
Edward- He's romantic, passionate, and sensitive. He's more mature, and "refined." The downside: There's the risk he'll eat her. Even more, he's scared that by loving her he might be putting her soul in jeopardy.
Jacob- He's rash and careless and times. He's more immature, but buff and fun. He's the natural choice... he's human.

The main character,Bella moves in with dad and start new school and meets Edward....
Edward= Vampire,Doesn't kill people only feeds off animals,Has big family of "good"vampires ,doesnt age, can listen to others thoughts
Bella's dad has a best friend who"s son is Jacob
Jacob=Although he's a werewolf he can give bella a more normal life than edward because if with edward bella would prefer to change into a vampire so she can stay young with edward. And after being changed into a vampire she would have a hunger for any blood that she could get.so they would have to move away right to a location that is full of animals that she can feed on.
Edward and Jacob Hate other not only because they both are madly in love with Bella but it also goes all the way back to their ancestry.

Jacob = werewolf who's totes in love with Bella, sensitive and emo. Think of the scene kid you go to school with, who doesn't talk much and usually has his hair in his face. He wears a lot of bracelets and band t-shirts, and probably writes really crappy poetry in his composition notebook during study hall about how he'll never get a girlfriend because he's perpetually stuck in the friend zone.
Edward = vampire who's totes in love with Bella, very sexy and dangerous. Think of the hot aloof kid that you sort of can't stand because he likes making obnoxious jokes in class, but you think underneath his obnoxious rich-boy exterior there beats the heart of a...I don't know, you think he has a heart or something, because no one can be that much of an @sshole all the time, right? He has a lot of money and he always parties on the weekends with his equally rich, equally attractive friends. You secretly want to take a ride on the back of his motorcycle because he's just SO DANGEROUS.
Jacob and Edward effectively split men into two categories--bad boys with good hearts, and sensitive boys who'll do anything for you. It comes down to which generic caricature straight women would rather date. Sometimes women will actually argue for which one is the better fit for Bella (in which case, Jacob wins, because he's not completely creepy, obnoxious, and overbearing like Edward).

It's because the series expresses the "moral" that girls are worth nothing without a man in their lives and promotes Edward and Jacob as the perfect lovers... despite the fact that almost everything they do towards Bella is incredibly selfish, possessive, and even abusive.

Well two things can happen, we can all break-down the basics of Edward and Jacob for you and then you can choose to read the book or not for yourself. OR you can let people who have no interest in Twilight bash it and potentially ruin it for you.
I myself was anti-Twilight not so long ago. My sister was like you gotta read it you have to! And I ignored her over and over again until she bought me a copy. I began reading it and could not put it down.
Different people, based on your age and intellect will take different things from Twilight. I myself love the books now. There is more than the dynamic of ooh hot boys in love with a plain girl to this story, but as I said its what you take from it.
The Volturi are all VERY dynamic characters, with "history" (though mostly fictional is extremely interesting in my opinion.)
Most people that have commented but are fairly accurate on there character descriptions of Edward and Jacob but as I said before you will take whatever you want from the book based on your OWN intellect. For me its not all about horned up hot sweaty guys.
And for the personal who commented something about "the people who want the perfect boyfriend", anyone with a brain knows two things. There is no such thing as the "perfect man". And obviously you have never read any of the novels as both characters have their own problems to over come AND their own imperfections.
My advice is to take a chance on a few chapters if you dont like it quit. Its only a few minutes of your life.

Because the sort of people who like Twilight in the first place are also the sort of people who are obsessed with having the perfect boyfriend, and who really _do_ think of people as walking lists of requirements without which they are not worth talking to.
Character development? Twilight? You are joking, right?
