    1. If you are still a high school student, hold a conversation (or 2 or 3) with a high school guidance counselor to learn about scholarships and other forms of higher education financial aid. Often there are scholarships that are available from local organizations for just the graduates of particular high schools in the area where you live. Also, be sure your counselor instructs you in the similarities and differences between local/state supported colleges/universities, private/independent colleges/universities, and for-profit/career/proprietary colleges/universities. Plus, learn about the ins and outs of higher education financial aid, which includes scholarships, grants, and loans.

    2. Once you identify colleges/universities to which you want to apply, you should talk (by phone or in-person) with financial aid counselors at those schools regarding scholarships and other forms of financial aid. Many colleges/universities have their own scholarship funds for their students only. From my personal experience, generally private/independent colleges/universities have larger "pots of money" for scholarships and grants for their students than do the local/state supported schools.

    3. You can start researching scholarships for which you may qualify and may wish to apply (when you are eligible to do so) using the well-respected College Board Scholarship Search database:

    http://apps.collegeboard.org/cbsearch_ss/welcome.j...

Click on the Start link in the middle of the page. If you wish to register (free), you will be able to return to your search strategy later and modify it. Be assured you will not receive spam messages after you register for the database search.

    4. Ask your high school librarian and/or a public library reference librarian to direct you to some good "old fashioned type" materials (books and periodical articles) on scholarships and other types of higher ed. fin. aid, too.
