    That green is tarnish from the alloy of copper and other base metal that make up the gold-colored ring. The ring is not gold if it turns your finger green. Look inside the ring for a hallmark which tells what it's made of, or plated with;

    GF= gold filled. That's a mechanically applied layer of gold on top of something else.

    HGE= heavy gold electroplate. That is a plating of gold cause by imersing the item in an electrolytic treatment.

    GP= gold plate, not to be confused with GPL, which is "Gold plumb" with is an absolute percentage of gold in the alloy. Plumb gold doesn't turn your finger green.

    Any of the platings or coatings can fracture or wear off, exposing the base metal underneath, which tarnishes and discolors the skin. Also the jewelry may not be plated with gold at all. A solid brass ring will always turn green as it tarnishes.

    Silver or sterling silver may oxidize to black when corrupted with sulfur, but generally won't turn your finger green.

  • The cause is cheap gold plated jewelry. Buy the real stuff and your fingers will not turn green.. The sweat and oils from your fingers is reacting with the cheap metal, causing the green residue...
