can I use my smartphone as a modem for an iPad 2?

I have a Droid X2 that I use as a modem for my MacBook Pro. It not only has Mobile Hotspot, but also a USB ethernet option with PDAnet.

We have tried it with Samsung Galaxy S, and it worked no problem, it will work with your Android too. On the other hand, we used WiFi tethering, and I don't know the way to tether it via USB, so it will burn through your phone battery in no time.

Yes, you can use a Droid X2 as a mobile hotspot for your iPad 2. But remember that you will need to activate a mobile hotspot plan on your smartphone, to be able to take advantage of this kind of connectivity.

While a regular 3G iPad uses a cellular network to go online, the mobile hotspot option simply tethers your phone for on-demand internet connection. I myself use the same method and have also enabled encryption for data security on my iPad 2.
