Ubuntu portable help?

Right, to cut the crap, i'm downloading the ubuntu-11.10-desktop-i386.iso file from the official website, and I just want to know.

When I burn it to my CD, and run it from the CD, WILL IT MAKE UBUNTU MY PERMANENT OS? Cause I don't want to be re-installing windows just for a stupid mistake. And also, tell me, if I do run it, how do I... Not run it? Do I just take out the CD? HELP Pl0x0rz!

What happens is that it will display a splash screen with a few options (try, install, check cd, and memtest). Just hit the try option here to get a liveCD that won't effect anything already installed. If you do addidently hit the install option just restart the computer. The installer doesn't actually write anything to the disk until the second to last step so it's very hard to install it when you don't want to.

To run it, boot with the CD in the drive, if that doesn't work try changing the boot order in the BIOS settings.

When you burn Ubuntu image (.iso file) to the CD and boot from it, your PC will boot to Ubuntu and a window will appear asking you if you want to INSTALL or TRY ubuntu.

As long as you click on TRY, nothing is going to happen. You can try Ubuntu and check out all its features and your Windows installation WILL NOT BE AFFECTED.

When you are done, shutdown, remove the CD and restart the PC and you can boot to Windows as usual.

There is also a desktop shortcut for INSTALL you might want to stay away from..!

To summarize, booting your PC from Ubuntu Live CD WILL NOT INSTALL anything on your computer UNLESS YOU EXPLICITLY GIVE IT PERMISSION to do so(even then it will ask for confirmation).

There is much to be said for running Linux from LiveCD/DVD as it runs from the available RAM on a Computer. Performance can be surprisingly good if there is sufficient amount of RAM available

The major downside is as it does not the Hard Drive settings cannot be saved between sessions so it is better to use a Linux distro. that will work out of the box without the need to install things like Flash player and multimedia codecs.

Ubuntu does not lend itself well to this as you need to install the packages mentioned above each time you start a session running from LiveCD

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 11. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled.

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 11 then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Your workstation would must be waiting as nicely from a usb no longer straightforward rigidity to do this. enter the bios and spot in case you may enable that selection, in case you may then make useful the portable harddive has the Linux distro copied to it a similar way as a cd would so the 1st element the bios sees is the boot info. this would artwork greater useful in case you place the linux distro on a usb flash rigidity yet the two way your workstation will would desire to be able boot from the usb port.
