1. very little food is available in the winter
2. the bear stores up fat and energy by eating anything and everything they can
3. calcium levels get higher, and the bears systems, such as it's metabolism, slow to a point where the bear is virtually dead

1. bears eat plants, vegetables, almost anything. Nothing available in winter, so they store up lots of fat in summer.
