What is the legal age requirement to work in California?

I am a mature, responsible 13-going-on-14 year old girl living in California. I come from a family in which money is always an issue. I have been babysitting, catsitting, bunnysitting, etc for a couple years now, but need a more consistent income. Obviously, when I am able to work, I will do so during the summer and around my school hours (I am a straight-A student). I have heard some people say that I can get a work permit at my age, but I have also heard that it is illegal to work before the age of 16. Does anyone know how to obtain a work permit and at what age I will be able to do so? All answers are appreciated, thank you.

Technically infants can work in California, although that's mostly in the entertainment industry (babies in movies and such). So, there isn't really a minimum age you can work in California. There are age restrictions on the types of work you can do. As you get older, you become eligible to do more and more types of work.

The link below lists guidelines for different ages and the types of work allowed.

Well I can tell you that you can't work at 13.
