Water bottle and splash guard question?

Hey y'all. I just got a water bottle and a splash guard for it and I have a question. It says you should sterilize the splash guard by boiling it and it is dishwasher safe, but I'm not sure how to clean the guard before I use the bottle and the guard for the first time. I know I can put the bottle in the dishwasher on the top rack, too. So my question is, do I need to boil the guard before the first use, or will it be okay if I just swish it around in hot soapy water? The guard is still in the package. Thanks, guys. :)

No organisms can survive exposure to automatic dishwasher detergent, so no, you don't need to boil it.

Boil it when you go camping maybe, but even washing it with hand dishwashing soap and rinsing should be sufficient. You're not doing brain surgery with this thing. Just being outside and moving around lifts enough bacteria off the ground and other surfaces to more than swamp the numbers on your water bottle.

All, of course, assuming you're not immuno-compromised, having just recently escaped from your plastic bubble! :-)
