Why wouldn't/don't you wear a helmet?

For what reason do you choose not to wear a helmet? Do you feel that you are taking a risk when you don't? For what reason?

Update:

For curiousity's sake, how old are you and how many years do you have in the saddle?

Update 2:

Please don't thumbs down anyone's answer. This is a poll - there's no correct or incorrect answer. It's not a poor answer simply because you disagree.

    My head, my body.

That said, I like my head and the fact that my brains are on the inside. Except in very rare occasions, I will always wear my helmet.

I also personally think that minors should be required to wear helmets. They can make the decision to ditch them when they become adults.

Oh, and I am 21, and have been riding for over a decade.

I feel that no matter the horse, you should always wear a helmet whenever you are schooling, trail riding or showing. Whenever you are getting on a horse with out a helmet, you are gambling with your life. Helmets aren't expensive, and in my opinion there is no reason why you should not wear a helmet. I never trust a horse not to shy, bolt, buck, or rear unexpectedly, and not wearing a helmet in this situation can be fatal. It is just not worth it. I have seen too many people, including my best friend, die from accident involving horses, and none of them had worn helmets. If they had worn helmets, not one person would have died.

Also, it is stupid to break or train horses without helmets. These horses aren't trained properly, and are more resistent to riders.Just wear the helmet, they save lives.

The only time I will not wear a helmet is if I am wearing my top hat, in Prix San Georges and up.

I am 21, and have been riding and been around horses my whole life. I have been riding consistently since I was 4, in Germany, and was the only kid with a helmet in my lessons, because I demanded it.

I wear a helmet at lessons because we have too. I honestly would feel very strange on an english saddle with no helmet.

When I'm at my best friend's and we're around her horses, which is only about once a month, I don't wear a helmet (unless her dad is there, he sort of freaks out if I don't have one on). I think because I'm in a western saddle that feels a lot bigger than what I'm used and I feel like my chances of falling off are a lot less (in no way was that meant to be rude to western riders).

Im 22 and have been riding since I was 11. I wear a helmet when ever I ride a new horse (unless I know and trust the judgement of the owner when they say the horse is safe) also whenever Im at a new place I wear one out of respect for the owner unless they say they dont mind me not wearing it. I wear one whenever I jump. No matter how high or how well I know the horse. I wear one whenever there are kids around Either in the ring or if I know they will be watching.

I dont wear one. When I'm at my barn or a barn where the owner/trainer knows me and is ok with me not wearing a helmet. AND I know the horse, am only flatting, and I know all the other horses and riders in the ring.

I ride a helmet with my instructor because it's part of the safety contract. I also wear it when riding my friend's horse because she has one and I enjoy having one on.

The only time I don't is my friend's barrel horses. She doesn't have any, and neither do I. I trust her horses enough as well. I'm good at sitting in the saddle plus we only ride Western so just in case I have the horn to hold on tight.

I won't even pass up a helmet if I have the opportunity...

Do I feel at risk? Absolutely. Do I know the risks? Absolutely. I do it because mainly it isn't available and I'm not incredibly worried to pay for my own helmet.

I'm a first year college student and have been riding for 9 or so years.

I personally don't wear a helmet as I have never wore one. It's a cowboy thing. But I have noticed that most of the accidents that happen while riding are mostly broken bones or broken necks. There's a lot of activities and a few in home things that should be done wearing a helmet.

That being said. I have two grand daughters that are to young at this time to ride with me but when they are I would insist they wear one. It will have to be, "Do as I say not as I do. I'm grandpa, deal with it."

I always wear my helmet. I was basically trained to wear it all the time. If it was just me, no friends/instructors/parents, I would probably go without my helmet half the time. It's sort of fun, feeling the wind in your hair, but it is safer to wear one. I honestly don't want to fall, not have mine on, and get seriously hurt. But I do ride without when I'm just playing around in my horse's paddock bareback with a halter. I'm 13 years old and have been riding since I was 6, so 7 years in the saddle.

I didn't wear a helmet growing up because my family never bought me one. I was probably 2 when I started riding without being led. I had to wear one once I turned 10 or so and joined 4-H and showed. I am an adult now, with a child of my own and I have to say that I will make my daughter wear one when she learns to ride.

I will ALWAYS wear a helmet. I like my brains where they are and I want to be alive to see my daughter do great things.

I'm 55 and when I was a kid the only time you wore a helmet was for jumping; you never had a helmet for bike riding either back at that time. Now it's a big deal to have a helmet on your head on a bike or a horse. I prefer to not wear a helmet unless I'm jumping.

The only time I ever wear a helmet is when I'm getting on a horse that I don't know for the first time, or if the horse is spunky while I'm riding. Otherwise I never do, the first and only time I ever got thrown I landed on my feet so I don't need one in my opinion. To be a little specific I do barrels, jumping, team penning, and trail riding, along with western showing.

  • I have been riding for 13 years and I wore a helmet for about 5 years when my grandma made me too, but once I stopped riding with her. I trust my horse a lot, I trained her, so I don't feel as if i'm taking a risk riding without one.

I've been riding since I was two, I am fifteen now.
