Can someone show me how the answer to this equation is -22?

I am trying to learn algebra. Can someone break down the steps for me on how the answer to this equation is -22? The tutorial says that is the answer, but I just cannot figure out how it was arrived at. I am very new at this. I know its probably simple, but I just can't seem to get it. Thanks for your help! also - when I was typing the expression, I was not able to superscript the "squared" two. Sorry.

    Given:

    5×2² − 7(4 + 2)

This problem isn't even really algebra, it's just following the order of operations: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction.

    Parentheses are first:

    5×2² − 7(6)

    Next comes exponents:

    5(4) − 7(6)

Next is multiplication or division (in this case, we have two multiplications, so we just do them from left to right):

    20 − 42

    Last is addition or subtraction:

    -22

So the x's are multiplication right?

So remember order of operation (do the following in order):

    Brackets

    Exponents

    Division

    Multiplication

    Addition

    Subtraction

Division and multiplication is which ever comes first, and same with addition and subtraction.

    So:

    5 x 2² – 7x (4+2)

    =5 x 2² - 7 x 6 [do brackets first]

    =5 x 4 - 7 x 6 [do exponents next]

    =20 - 7 x 6 [do the first multiplication next]

=20 - 42 [do the next multiplication next] [or just do this and the above at the same step]

    =-22

Hope that helped, and made sense! :)

When typing a number with an exponent you do it like this. 2 squared would be 2^2. 3 squared would be 3^2..

    So now we have

    5 x 2^2- 7 x (4+2)

    5 x 4 -7 x 6

    20 - 42

    -22

first you would do whats in parentheses (4+2) which equals 6. so now your equasion is: 5 x 2^2 - 7 x 6

    next you do the exponents 2^2 which equals 4. now your equasion is: 5 x 4 - 7 x 6

mutiplication is done before subtraction so you multiply 5 x 4 which would be 20, and 7 x 6 which would be 42. so now the equation is 20 - 42 which is -22

    hope that helped.

use order of operations: parenthesis, exponents, multiply/divide, add/subtract....

    5 x 2(squared) – 7x (4+2)

    5 x (4) - 7 x (6)

    20 - 42

    -22

Please Excuse My Dumb *** Students PEMDAS parenthesis, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract. Those are the order of operations- the order of importance and what you do first in an equation. So the equation is 5x2^2-7x(4+2), 5x4-7x(6), 20-42, -22
