I just had a bear in my yard. It is a black bear. How dangerous are they?
This bear is funny. He goes around and picks up bird feeders and eats out of them. He took the humming birds sugar water and drank it all. He or she does not give a darn about anything. It sits down and does not move. One time, it came up to the back of the kitchen and put its nose against the glass doors. It has a huge head. It looks really cool. I worry though because I go walking and I am afraid it will appear out of no where and attack me. I know they are strong and fast.

Black bears can be dangerous..but typically not as dangerous as say a Grizzly Bear. You might want to remove the feeders for the time being so the bear does not make a habit of visiting them for a free meal. The more accalimated to humans they are the more dangerous. Really though, they are not likely to bother you until you bother it, or it is a female with cubs. Females with cubs are the biggest threat to humans. Also, the only time a Black Bear might be "dangerous" is if you startle it while out hiking. It is always good to hike in pairs so that you can talk to each other and make noise. If alone, try and sing while hiking in bear country, or wear "bear bells" so you make some noise to let the bears know where you are so that they can avoid you. They will avoid you at most costs if they can. Food is a different story..keep garbage on your property in bear proof cans, and like I said, remove the feeders for now until the bear stops coming around, then put them back. I too get bears in my yard on a regular basics and have never been threatened by one. Even had a few mama and baby bears too.

Despite what some believe, black bears are very shy and unlikely to harm an adult. (unlike a grizzly).
This can be bad because some people will feed them and make them expect food from people.
Once they see people as a food source, they may approach someone readily expecting a hand out.
This can make them appear agressive or dangerous. And that's not good for the bear. Best to just observe or scare away. Don't know if they will attack pets, could be.

Unless they feel like you're a threat to them (Stealing their food, invading territory, attacking etc.) then you'll be fine. If its a female, im pretty sure the females are more aggressive. If there are babies near it, don't go near it.

They aren't very aggressive unless provoked, but it is a large powerful animal so it's best to give it a wide berth and try not to surprise it.

I wouldn't put my head in it's mouth or poke it with a stick. In fact, I wouldn't go near it at all.
