What exactly is meant by a SWOT analysis?

When doing a SWOT analysis for a business, what is meant by the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats?

I am writing a paper for my internship that I completed, and the person I would normally ask is hardly ever available. I have to write at least one page for each part of the SWOT analysis as part of my paper. Obviously some of this is self-explanatory, but I'm having a hard time understanding what would be considered a threat or an opportunity in regards to what I'm supposed to write about. Could that refer to, say, competition, or work ethic?

Yes, a threat could be a competing company or service, or even poor work ethics of employees.

What could either mean to a company and its success?
