When a gene is expressed an RNA is transcribed and translated to produce a protein or it is transcribed to produce a functional RNA that is not translated but works as a tRNA, rRNA, snRNA ect.

Gene expression is the process of transcribing the information in the DNA template and synthesizing a functional molecule.

It depends on the gene, but I think you're referring to phenotype.
