The Conservative Party has several big differences from the National Party. 1. It opposes the partial asset sales National wants. 2. They want referendums where more than 67% of voters approve to be legally binding and the want to remove the anti-smacking bill. National ignored a referendum vote of 87% to overturn the anti-smacking law. 3. They want to raise the drinking age to 21. National is leaving it as a conscience vote and John Key says he favours a split age of 18 in bars and 20 in supermarkets/off-licences. 4. They want more family values/conservative Christian values openly promoted by govt. The National Party is more socially liberal with John Key even attending the Big Gay Out. 5. They want much stricter welfare reform where anyone on the benefit has to work to stay on it. 6. They want the Parliamentary term increased to 4 years and the number of MPs reduced from 120 to 99. 7. They want the Emmissions Trading Scheme which National passed repealed and the foreshore and seabed returned to Crown Ownership.
All in all they are far to the right of National. ACT is economically right of National but they are socially liberal. The conservatives are economically and socially right of National. National is just centre-right, not far-right like the Conservatives.
