Without sound, a big bang is still a big bang...

It's called "big bang" because Fred Hoyle called it that during a 1949 radio broadcast. He was trying to make it sound silly, but only succeeded in making himself sound silly.

Quote: "These theories were based on the hypothesis that all the matter in the universe was created in one _big bang_ at a particular time in the remote past."

It was a derisive term coined by an opponent of the Big Bang, who was trying to make it sound ridiculous when using that term.

For whatever reason, his name for it stuck.

Source(s): Read up on Georges Lemaitre (came up with the Big Bang) and Fred Hoyle (came up with the Steady State, and ridiculed the Big Bang, and gave it the name we use for it today)

the reason why its called the big bang is not because of its meaning but the explosion that came after. the word bang has many meanings beside discribing a sound.

    there*

things can go boom without the need of traveling sound

also 'bang' is the wrong term, it was more of a rapid expansion than a bang
