A few stands he took:
The Beatles were one of the first bands ever to speak negatively about apartheid in South Africa, refusing to play there. (1964-1965)
Commented on the lessening role of religion in modern life (1966, and his words were quite misunderstood, which caused a firestorm)
Returned his MBE (Member of the British Empire) medal in protest of Vietnam (1969)
Involved himself with radical left-wing politics in America, hanging out with the Yippies (1972)
The Beatles, and Lennon, were not among the most political figures of the era; the Beatles tried not to get too explicit, and Lennon toned down his rhetoric in 1972 when the US began deportation proceedings against him.
