Why do people post statuses about cancer and soldiers?

I see all these statuses about how cancer patients just want to survive and how you should show support for the troops by posting this status. Then at the end, they say something like "many of you won't repost this because you have no heart". My cousin, who I'm close with, is in Afganistan now and two of my aunts recently recovered from cancer. And I just sold a bunch of things on eBay and donated 100% of the proceeds to breast cancer research. So why would I post that as my status? Is it helping the troops and cancer victims by telling people they don't have a heart if they don't post this? I don't get it.

What are you talking about and why would anyone post a “status” or care?

I feel the same way about statuses like that. It's a way of people feeling like they've done something without lifting a finger. The guilt trip at the end of "many of you won't repost this because you have no heart" is a way of bettering themselves in the eyes of others. I don't get it and probably never will. It usually stems from naivete with these sorts of things.

As a side note, be careful of sending money to charities like the one you did. Some of them scam good-intentioned people and use the proceeds to line their pockets.
