abba
rihanna - nicki's stuff often seems like a lot of gibberish to me and while i sort of miss rihanna's debut image a little, i do still love her voice.
don't recognize billy talent T_T
kesha - this isn't even because she's up against that attention-seeking thirteen year old. though sometimes kesha's lyrics are a bit too much for me, her stuff is catchy, and considering she uses autotune, it actually fits the songs quite well.
not familiar with who cody simpson is D:
lady gaga, not by too much - lady gaga's music is a hit or miss with me, and her attention-whoring image turns me off, but with katy perry i absolutely can't stand her existence (it'd take a little too long to explain) so i'm going with gaga.
pink, also very close! i think i prefer her image, but both she and beyonce are stunning and i love their music~
ah, i just saw that additional details bit and i think that was directed at me? ._. i'll try to answer this then, and hope that you don't get angry or offended by it. ;; i know she's pretty popular.
basically, i initially didn't get her appeal. her lyrics are usually cliched, overly simple, and without substance. her voice is grating and not what i'd consider impressive singing. her looks and dancing aren't outstanding either. songs like hot and cold were so basic and the words were so third-grade level that it irked me. i also didn't like that she had to use a gimmick like girl on girl action in i kissed a girl to get attention. but you can say all that about other artists, and her music isn't necessarily that bad, so that's not largely what i hold against her.
in an interview once, she'd said she was like "a fatter version of amy winehouse and a skinnier version of lily allen." there were so many problems with this statement that drove me up the wall. first of all, she needed to back off with the body shaming. she says later on this was a joke, which i'm sure it was, but it was tasteless, humorless, and classless. therefore, i don't excuse her from this. eating disorders are no joke. it's not funny or cute. neither is insinuating that lily allen is fat - especially as she isn't and there's barely a difference in their body size. i was also irked by the fact that both these women (while i do sometimes cringe at all the sex in some of lily allen's songs, she has written some outstanding, sassy, clever, and biting ones as well) have far more talent than katy perry could ever possess.
her song "you're so gay." i'm not an incredibly close follower of hers so i don't know if this song got any backlash, but most of what i saw when this song came out was people saying "lay off everyone, stop taking things so seriously, it's just a song," or "lol this is so funny i know a guy just like that he's so annoying," or "just listen to the song she's not even talking about actual gay people." but this song really makes me angry (i'm trying not to use profanity but it's getting a little hard). lines like "i hope you hang yourself with your h&m scarf" and "i can't believe i fell in love with someone that wears more makeup than [me]" all combined with the chorus "you're so gay and you don't even like boys," is more or less saying: "look at you acting like a gay person, you're so annoying, etc. because obviously these personality traits in a man can't just be personality traits, i can't just complain about them separately because you're crazy, finicky, and stingy. no, these traits are gay, because all gay people act that way. all gay people fuss about weight and makeup and clothes like women. therefore, i will call you gay. see how clever i am?" it's making blanket statements about a group of people and perpetuating horrid stereotypes, and the fact that she would willingly sing it says to me that she's either stupid and doesn't realize it's not cute, it's not clever, it's not funny, or that she's insensitive and bigoted.
so yeah all of that piled onto the fact that i find no truly redeemable quality in her music just means that i've grown to strongly, strongly dislike her. ): maybe some of her fans would say i'm reading too much into it or i'm just looking for something to be offended by, but really, she just turns me off and i now find everything associated with her unpleasant.
