Why did/would Gary Speed commit Suicide?

RIP Gary, I have sympathy for all his friends, family and fans out there, even if I don't like football. What a tragic way to go. His kids could've walked in on him.

To the general population I think suicide is such a complex phenomena that trying to figure out what Gary was thinking in the hours before this tragic event we will never know. And I suspect that if it was explained to us, we probably still wouldn't understand it anyway. How can we understand if we haven't had suicidal tendencies in the first place. Why Gary, why why? Why now? After all this time of wonderful success you would want to end it all so dramatically. Was there a suicide note? Did his wife have any inkling of such a tragedy? I know through experience that women are unbelievably perceptive. You can't fool a loving wife. So was Gary that good and skilled to be able to fool everyone, including his family, that suicide was the only way out for peace and to be free at last. Gary was running on empty but for how long? As far as I'm concerned there is something not quite right about this whole tragedy. Nothing adds up. You can understand other very famous former footballers would consider ending it all because of their depression, drug and alcohol use, nobody would be surprised. What is the uncomfortably incredibly sad about of all of this, is that none of us saw this coming and apparently there were absolutely no clues. Gary was a great player for my team Leeds U and scored some crucial goals almost at will. He was a legend at Leeds and I hope they will place a memorial at Elland Road, so we never forget that Gary was just a fantastic guy. RIP Gary Speed.

The answer to this question may become known at some point in the future, but it really isn't a question we should either ask, or expect, to know an answer to.

I've admired Gary as both a player and manager for many years. His loss for football fans is immense and extremely sad. I caught the news right at the end of Radio 4's news bulletin just before 1.30pm as part of the closing headlines. Having watched him look his usual bubbly self on BBC's Football Focus on Saturday I was truly shocked that someone so loved and admired had gone.

Views on knowing 'why' are not in the least bit important either now, perhaps never. I only hope that journalists will not go prying into his personal state of mind and hope they will have the decency to leave his family and close friends to grieve. If they do so they will start to repair the damage done to journalists in recent years.

Personally I hope that Gary's family can cope with his loss, and come to terms with it over time. When we lose someone precious time may never heal the wounds completely, particularly in such tragic circumstances. My heart goes out to them all.

RIP Gary. You truly were a star, in all ways, but particularly as a decent human being.

Who knows what goes through someones head before they commit suicide, I lost a friend in June this year, he hung himself, I spoke to him the day before he did it and he was really upbeat and he was seen buying shopping and loads of tobacco and smiling and joking around hours before he did it, but he did it nevertheless, my heart goes out to Gary's family at this difficult time..... But I fear we will never know why he did it. People don't always ask for help that's just a fact of life and believe that they only have one option, Gary's death does not make any sense no matter how you look at it, he had no history of depression was not in debt, had a loving family and a wonderful job, I mean no disrespect however it wouldn't surprise me if there is more to his death than meets the eye.

Lots of people say its due to depression, but hanging your self at home, where you will be found by your nearest and dearest, is not the typical way to commit suicide if just depressed, there would be a lot of thought that goes into it. and i think he would of had time to take into consideration his family and how they would find him, and hanging is not a peace full way to go, it would seem that something pushed him over the edge and the decision to end his life was taken swiftly.

not every body has a bottle of whiskey and pills at hand to overdose, but most households you will be able to grab a belt or piece of rope in under 30 seconds.

I would suggest that it was a snap decision, bought on by some devastating Revelation..

no matter what the cause it is a very sad loss R.I.P Speedy

At the moment they do not know why he committed suicide, it is very sad indeed as he was a great footballer and manager, a real gentleman. It is a sad day for his family, the football world and his fans. Gary seemed to have so much going for him at the moment so it makes you wonder why he did it, and sad to think that he thought suicide was the only way out.

Paul is getting slated and agree in the terms he set his point out with a religious modus operandii. However this is his opinion in which I share a gripping gut wrenching thoughts for the family who speedy has left behind to pick up the pieces. I also feel deeply stunned and saddened by the news as a devoted Newcastle fan and the way speedy was an inspirational person captain and mentor! Such a loss. To conclude, we just don't know what goes on behind closed doors and should respect those doors remain closed whilst the family grieve this surreal loss of a loved one

I feel very sorry for his family. Paul you are out of order saying these things. Religion is for a certain few who believe in that drivel. Evolution is how we were all made NOT by some great and wonderful man who noone has EVER seen and never will. I have no problem with someone believing in something to better their life but do not !! talk that **** like its the law. Retard!! Have some thought and sympathy.

Suicide is a sin. Not only is it a bad option, its v. God's will. It is selfish & christ denying. Guilt? Fear? Inadequacy? Stress? Pain? God takes them from us & gives His love & security in return. Gary was not faithful to God or his family. Smacks of self-indulgence.
