I've been growing my nails for about a month now and I'm in the exact same position as you. I think if you have bitten your nails all your life, then your nails will be weak for a long time. It requires a lot of patience but stick it out and just keep growing them and filing them. Once you have been growing them for a long time, they will be much stronger. In the meantime, i would invest in 'Sally Hansen Nail Growth Miracle' or some other strengthener. I have been using the Sally Hansen one and I like it. It will maybe keep your nails from breaking and promote growth :)

I would go get a manicure with this new thing that they do. They paint your nails with a gel nail polish, causing them to be thicker and it doesn't chip and you can't peel it off. It's a little more money to get it done, but it's worth it.
