No Start on 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I have a friend with a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is a 4X4 and has the straight six that is driving us up a wall. When you turn it to the on position it lights up and none of the gauges work and it does not even read the fuel or amperage of the battery. We can crank it and it does crank but does not even power up the fuel pump and no spark is given and it has been proven as well. Everything else we have tried checks out and any extra help would be greatful needed becuase we are stumped. The Body Control Module has been taken out of the mix and is still working. Any help is needed and thanks for any answers you have.
On a side note, where does anyone know where to go to find the ENTIRE electrical schematic for that vehicle on the internet? A single website would be the best.

This is a very common problem with the 4.0L in the GC! You will also have No Communication with the scan tool if you try to retrieve codes from the PCM The problem is a shorted CKP (crankshaft position sensor) And what happens is it pulls the 5 volt reference voltage to ground thus "freezing" CCD data bus (why you don't have any IPC (instrument panel cluster) operation!
Test:
1. Test for a 5 volt reference voltage to the sensors.
2. If the voltage is not present, unplug one sensor at a time, starting with the CKP, as this one usually causes the problem. See if the voltage comes up to 5 volts and see if communication is now possible with the scan tool.

Ok lets get started here! sorry couldn't resist, your ignition switch does two things here. it serves as a junction to send power to the starter to turn the motor and also sends power to the fuse panel. this is where all the items you spoke of get there's. the key switch on the insides has multiple out bound contacts. power is getting up there because the starter turns but the run portion is not sending it to the fuse box. Now let me take you to school a second. electricity without ground does what? Nothing! yep but the starter is self grounded thus may spin. the rest the dash equipment has a post or two that require a solid connection to do their jobs. check a chiltons manual for the wiring ground locations or ask Dodge for this. they will likely help you there.

change the ignition switch it is mounted behind the key you have to take the top and bottom cover off the collum and if i rember right it will take a T15 torx bit to take it apart
