Is it possible for two people to have the same phone number?

So recently I've been having family members tell me when they try and call my cell phone number they are getting some other girl answering and I've been getting texts from random numbers as well thinking I am another girl, so I am wondering is it possible I have the same number as someone else in my state? And how to I fix this problem?

Update:

But I've had like 8 people complain about it and have had my 6 different people think I was some Kelsey chick. Maybe you're right though and those people just need to learn to read a dial pad.

While the accidental forwarding is quite possible & also a very good suggestion to look into as a resolution. On another level, it is possible to have two cell phones programmed to the same number. It's called cloning, & is very illegal, & very traceable & reconciled by your service provider when reported. On a less serious note, if your phone is "flashed" to another cellular company...(verizon to boost, or metro, or cricket, etc) it's possible that it was not done right. If that's the case you need them to resolve this, if not then contact your service provider.

I received a phone call today from someone stating they were given my same phone number. I no longer live in that state, so I'm not sure if that's possible. I called my phone provider and they said it does not show in the system that someone else has that number. It should show if someone else is assigned it.

I have this problem as well. Moved from Virginia 3 years ago and kept my old cell phone number. Twice within the last month, I've gotten calls from people in Virgina saying that I called them - which I most assuredly have not. But the only way they could "return" my call is if they dialed the number that called them...which is me.

There is a service called multi-sim which allows the same number to be allocated to different sims, you nominate which one you are using. However this isn't very popular nowadays and the networks don't push selling it as it stops you subscribing to other services - GPRS for example. What has probably happened is there is a mismatch on a route somewhere and you have been connected to the wrong device, giving the impression that there is another person using the same number. If you need any further explanation give me a shout.
