why have all the cars from the 20's & 30's been chopped?

I mean chopped back in the day, not made into a rod. It seems like everyone randomly threw off the doors (some have doors) and cut the back of the cab off, then filled it in with some boards, leaving the back of the chassis bare. Why?

    Because it was the depression and it was a cheap way to make a car into a pickup.
