What are some of the best drawing pencils and pens?
I'm an aspiring artist who is looking to work on shading and creating anywhere from realistic looking portraits with pencils, and more sharp and powerful images with pens. I'm looking for top quality pencils that are good for shading, and some good pens. I also need to know, what are some of the best quality color pencils? Something that comes in many colors, and that I can blend too. I'm not looking for an answer like "crayola". I'm looking for top quality.

I can answer the pencil part to your question:
1. Faber Castell Polychromos Colored Pencils - oil base, soft lead
100 of 120 Polychromos pencils - the colors will remain unchanged for more than 100 years. Tested by the Blue Wool Scale method. Check out "Faber Castell USA" website.
2. Caran D'Ache Luminance 6901 Colored Pencils - wax base
The colors will remain unchanged for more than 50 to 100 years . Tested by ASTM International and conforms to ASTM D-6901. Check out "Caran D'Ache" website.
3. Blick Studio Artists Colored Pencils
4. Caran D'Ache Pablo Colored Pencils - oil base, soft lead
5. Derwent Artists - wax base, medium hard lead
6. Derwent Coloursoft Pencils - wax base, soft lead
7. Derwent Studio Colored Pencils - wax base, hard lead
8. Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor Colored Pencils - oil base, soft lead
9. Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils - wax base, soft lead
10. Prismacolor Verithin Colored Pencils - wax base, hard lead
11. Prismacolor Col-Erase Pencils (student grade, erasable colored pencils, good for colored layouts)
Wax based colored pencils will leave behind a wax bloom, so simply use a spray art fixative to prevent it. There are "workable" fixatives and "permanent" fixatives. Some fixatives will give you a "matte" finish or "gloss" finish.
The best colored pencils to buy are pencils that are labeled "artist grade" or "professional grade" because they are highly pigmented, permanent, archival, and lightfast. You can also look for pencils that are labeled with these words: lightfast, light resistant, fade resistant, artist quality, fine quality, high quality, premium quality, professional quality. If you use "student grade" or "scholastic" pencils your artwork may fade over time because these pencils generally use a lower quality pigment.
The following two systems are used to rate the lightfastness of colored pencils: ASTM International gives ratings I, II, III, IV, V. Blue Wool Scale gives ratings 1 to 8. Ratings I, II and Ratings 8, 7, 6 are for permanent works of art! Some pencil manufacturers will reveal this information on the colored pencils/package or the manufacturer's website.
These are good pencil brands for graphite drawing:
Caran D'Ache Grafwood Pencils
Cretacolor Graphite Pencils
Derwent Graphic Pencils
Faber Castell 9000 Pencils
General's Kimberly Graphite Pencils
Prismacolor Turquoise Pencils
Sanford Design Drawing Pencils
Sanford Design Ebony Pencil (this makes an excellent black color)
Not all graphite pencil brands are made the same. The color and the hardness/softness of the graphite may vary, so decide which pencil brand you will use and stick with that brand to learn the pencil properties of that particular brand.
EXTRA TIPS:
The best drawing/painting surface to buy are surfaces that are labeled "archival" or "artist grade" or "professional grade" because they will last a very long time. You can also look for surfaces that are labeled with these words: acid-free, ph-neutral, lignin free, 100% cotton rag, 100% cotton, artist quality, fine quality, high quality, premium quality, professional quality. If you use "student grade" or "scholastic" surfaces your surface will deteriorate alot quicker and possibly turn yellow because these surfaces are made from lower quality materials.
Stonehenge Paper is excellent for colored pencil drawings.
Bristol Board (hot press/smooth) is good for a graphite pencil drawing. Bristol Board (cold press/textured) is good for a colored pencil drawing. Try Strathmore 500 Bristol Board which is archival.

Sara, hopefully this is not too frivolous an answer. I've been cartooning for a few decades now (only some of it paid work) and to be honest, a very good medium point black rollerball with fairly fluid ink flow can do wonders. I find that it's good about the same sensitivity and ink spread that a more expensive and fickle pen-and-ink set would have. I guess I'm not old school enough, i don't know. All I know is the drawings are clear and scan well into digital form for publication. Hope this helps.

First of all, you are the artist, you must find out what works best for YOU. I have tried many different pens/pencils, being a manga artist, i prefer things like Prismacolor markers and graphic pencils, but that's me. So go and try out some of the art materials for yourself, i cannot personally tell you what is the BEST for you but i can recommend some material. So try out many different varieties, your can probably go to the art store and the ll let you try out some of the materials, or even anime cons will have booths for you to draw and test out there Products. Or you can buy one or two of the products before you go and buy the whole thing, so you know what your buying, no some of the things i recommend, but most of them are my favorite brands, sakura, blick or prismacolor
pencils,
I personally use Sakura sumo grip pen because the grip is big and i write heavy so the tip wont break,
for graphic i use Premier Turquoise Drawing Lead and Holder, or blick(i think) graphic pencils
pens,
i find that even the drugstore brand ball point works good, but if ima not doing sketches i like to use a micron by sakura, or the sakura brush tip, i dont use nib pens but a lot of my friends do and they say they work great.
colored pencils,
Ipersonallyy dont use colored pencils, but my art teacher said and recommends the prismacolor ones, i have uses watercolor pencils, they are great for blending(what i find) and turn out great.
Now this is some of the things i recommend, this may or many not be the best for you, hope this helps.

I don't think there are any wrong answers to your question, as all media is a springboard of inspiration. Artists don't set limitations, but explore and create with a variety of mediums available to best express themselves, as they choose, at that point in time. Not all art is mainstream, or realistic, but your art is your passion, and that passion is infinite... even with crayola, make it "creative crayola". Some see a broken dish as trash, I see it as pieces for a collage or mosaic. So just start and add to your tools of creativity, then add some more. You are the one who will find what's best for you. What you love today may explode into something not yet imagined tomorrow. enjoy! peace.

For regular pencils I use "Staedtler" pencils. They come in different packs depending on what you do - the artist pack will come with softer leads darker leads so your drawings can pop more.
Then for colored pencils and pens there is a company called "Prismacolor" that are great.
I'd say these are some top quality - hope they meet your standards.
