DROID CHARGE SMARTPHONE NOT TURNING ON PROPERLY?!?

PLEASE HELP! ASAP!

Okay so my phone, the Droid Charge, just started acting VERY strange earlier today after I attempted to update it. Let me explain...

There was a little message that popped up on my phone telling me that I needed a software update for it, so I pressed Install Now. I let it do it's thing which included rebooting; while it was doing that, it showed the red "eye" screen that comes on before it displays your phone "main/background" screen for a long time and it wouldn't stop. I was unsure what to do since it was like this for at least 30 minutes and my phone was getting REALLY warm quickly. I then decided and attempted to power it off from what it was doing than turn it back on. So that's what I did, then it would do the process all over again where the phone itself would keep on going on the "Red eye" display screen or whatever it's called. Many times I opened up the back of the phone and took the battery out, popped it back in, then tried to reboot it again and it would STILL continue the same routine. Then, I tried once taking the battery out and putting it back in and plugging it into the charger, then it charged like normal (no problems what so ever there).

I just don't get what I did wrong. I've been STILL attempting to reboot it but it will still STAY at the same screen and not turn fully on. Do I need to get a new phone battery? Should I go to the store I purchased it at to see what they say, or can I maybe fix this on my own at home? Tips on how to NOT do this again?

I feel like I really messed it up because I might of screwed up the "reboot after update" process..since of course, that WAS what it was doing. I'm extremely unsure of how much damage I've done and how to fix it.

Update:

I'm thinking about taking it to the Verizon store soon...Will I lose all my info such as contacts and apps and etc?

First of all, @deeperlink, me being an Android developer, your post get's me so mad. I don't know how many times on various forums I have told people "DO NOT SHUT YOUR PHONE OFF OR PULL THE BATTERY DURING AN UPDATE." For you to sit there and say "blah blah blah" like it's nothing, just shows how little know.

To the person asking about the phone. What you did was "soft brick" your phone. When you're getting a system update, you never under any circumstances turn off your phone or pull the battery out. Now let me explain why. Even after you think the update is done and your phone is rebooting. It's writing files and processes to your system. When you pull the battery out or shut the phone off, you prematurely end those processes and completely screw up the phone. The only thing you can do now (because I'm not going to tell you to hack your phone) is take it to Verizon. They can do what is called "Odin" your phone back to factory settings from a computer at the store. You shouldn't lose your contacts because those are tied in to your Gmail account that you made when you set the phone up. You will probably some, if not all, of your apps though. Sometimes the Market automatically restores these but sometimes it doesn't.

Anyway, hope all this helps and for future reference lol, no more shutting off phones while it's in the middle of doing something.

If it was an OTA google update and your phone is not rooted then they should fix or replace it. When mine updated and went to the eye screen after rebooting itself it stayed like that for about 10 minutes and got warm. Thats just the processor and the update actually installing after being downloaded(just like an app does) If you can get to options do a factory reset, if its bricked tell them what happened and to fix it.

I don't think you did anything bad, the only bad thing is if you removed the battery from the phone while you had some message on screen like "don not remove the battery before ...bla bla...". I would suggest you to go to your local Verizon store and ask for help, but before that, try to reset phone to factory default, that helps 50% time. Here is the link how to reset it.
