Well this Is a hard one. I would have to say the dog and the archer fish. Though I would change this probably alot. On the one hand you have dogs, dogs are so smart they can learn sign language guide blind people attack roll over or sniff for something on command. Wild dogs have Been known to use trial and error. Back when I lived in the absoulute county side of over here there used to be a reservoir fenced in over miles of fence. The wolfs and coyotes would actually run there pray toward the fences and trap them.

Now the archer fish I also have one of these. The archer fish isn't neccasarily the smartest but very unique, the archer can actually surface toward a branch get to the perfect angle and shoot water out of it's gill. The water can hit prey above and push it of a branch then making a easy meal for the fish.

These are the ones wich I personally think are smartest though I'm sure there's others

elephants definitely they have complex social lives and live a long time,

dolphins / whales etc for the same reason

apes, basically any animal that lives in social hierarchies has to have a large brain, they have to know who's who to survive. They are inquisitive and capable of tool use.

crows as well as parrots are intelligent animals, can mimic use tools, google 'alex african grey parrot' he was a remarkable little critter.

non mammalian - octopus & squid and there is a little spider called 'portia' she is a jumping spider an active hunter, about the size of a thumb nail, with the brain the size of a pin head she can track prey.

most carnivores have to have a degree of intelligence otherwise they would not survive

The two smartest non-human animals are, according to encephalization quotient (brain to body mass ratio), the bottlenosed dolphin and the white faced capuchin monkey, a New World monkey. The white-faced capuchin monkey is familiar as the companion to organ grinders and they have been trained to assist paraplegic persons as helpers.

The bottlenose dolphin and the bonobo (a species of great ape).

This is not my opinion, this is widely accepted as scientific fact.

Cal King, the encephalization quotient is no longer used as a valid measurement of intelligence - there's too many holes and exceptions to the theory.

    Ceteaceans (whales/dolphins)

Orangutangs (every zoo knows you don't leave tools around in their reach, they dismantle the doors with them faster than any chimp could do).
