There is a very loose order. This subject is widely debated by some of the more hardcore Zelda fans.
For the most part we can all agree that there are two separate story lines. Also, the old GameBoy Zelda titles don't really have much of a place; they do fit in to the overall story, but even the developers themselves have said that a few of them are flexible in that they can really fit into the storyline in multiple places. On that note, DS Zelda titles are considered console games since DS games are capable of much more than older GameBoy titles.
With that in mind, I would focus mostly on the console games. Sure play the old GameBoy ones for fun, but I wouldn't try linking them into the storyline since they are more flexible in that respect; although I will mention Link's Awakening, that is the one GameBoy title that has been given a for sure place in the timeline. Additionally, there is one console title that falls under the same category as the GameBoy games, that is to say it has a flexible spot in the timeline - that is The Four Swords Adventure.
That all being said here is the general storyline that you should focus on starting with the earliest. Also keep in mind that after Ocarina Of Time the storyline splits into two, so I will name them separately.
Timeline 1:
Skyward Sword (Wii)
Ocarina Of Time (N64)
Majora's Mask (N64)
Twilight Princess (GameCube)
A Link To The Past (SNES)
Link's Awakening (GameBoy)
Legend Of Zelda (NES)
Zelda 2 (NES)
Timline 2:
Skyward Sword (Wii)
Ocarina Of Time (N64)
Wind Waker (GameCube)
Phantom Hourglass (DS)
Spirit Tracks(DS)
Again, Minish Cap, The Four Swords, The Four Swords Adventure, and The Orcale Of Seasons/ Ages are all games that can be plugged into these timelines in a number of different ways.
Finally, as my fellow answerers have stated, these games each have a stand-alone story and in reality they do not need to be played in any order whatsoever. Playing them in the order(s) listed above will be very slightly heplful since a few time some of the games reference previous game stories. The only time where it will be significantly helpful is in Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, Phantom Hourglass, and Twilight princess. Wind Waker makes a direct reference to Ocarina Of Time in the beginning. Majora's Mask contiues right after the events of Ocarina Of Time. Phantom Hourglass continues right after the events of Wind Waker. And Twilight Princess makes multiple references to Ocarina Of Time as well.
In the end each game at some point references some of the tales and lore from other games, but the games previously listed are the only ones that make really direct references. But again, these references are not so important that you absolutley MUST play in a certain order to understand anything. Personally, I would recommend playing the games in the order of the two timelines listed above (playing one timeline first and then another), but all in all it is fun to play any of these games in any order.
I hope this has been helpful. Have Fun! Cheers!

You can play them in any order. However, I recommend you begin with the games on the N64 because many Zelda fans have started out with them and they are some of the best. You may want to start with the 3D Zelda games because to me, they're a lot easier, but the 2D games are extremely addictive. Pretty much, you can go any way you want. There is supposedly a timeline, but it really doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

While there is a (speculated) timeline, you don't really need to play any game 'first' because the storyline isn't one that will baffle you if you haven't played other games, it just makes it more awesome.
Though there are some 'mini series' that you should play in order eg;
Wind Waker>>Phantom Hourglass>>Spirit Tracks
Ocarina of Time>>Majora's Mask
A Link to the Past>>Link's Awakening
The Legend of Zelda>>The Adventure of Link
____________________________________________
ADVISED ORDER:
____________________________________________
1.Skyward Sword
2.Ocarina of Time
3.Majoras mask
4.-Wind Waker
-Phantom Hourglass
-Spirit Tracks
-The Minish Cap
-The Four Swords
-The Four Sword Adventures
-Oracle of Seasons
<OR>
4.-Twilight Princess
-A Link to the Past
-Link's Awakening
-The Legend of Zelda
-The Adventure of Link
-Oracle of Ages

Skyward sword is a prequal to all the games and Phantom Hour Glass comes after Windwaker. All of the other games have thier own story so you wont get confused. Even if you play the other games mentioned above out of order, you wont get confused. Phantom Hour Glass will have a spoiler alert for wind waker that's all.

There's really no right order to playing the games. Because the games and timeline just goes all around the place. Just play them from oldest to newest.

The games do link together in certain ways but not enough that you have to play them in a certain order. But if you wanted somewhere to start then get Ocarina of Time.
Glad to help.
