In general, since electric cars are many times more efficient, they use far less energy than gas vehicles do. So this has a positive effect on energy conservation, pollution, and energy costs. Electric cars also have longer useful lifetimes, since electric motors are more durable than gas engines, and regenerative braking preserves brake disks and pads. So aside from remanufacturing batteries, cars should stay on the road longer and reduce total manufacturing energy.

There are some misinformed people here. EVs are great for the environment compared to gasoline. There is no part of the lead, plastic or acid that does not recycle and even with being charged from a coal burning plant they run at about 1/12th the load on the environment as a gas burner.

There is a great deal of made-up negative "facts" that other interests are trying to pursue. For example, a recent article on Yahoo about the environmental impact by battery manufacturers in developing nations never mentioned the exploding demand for cars in China, India and elsewhere. Their sole culprit for the damage was solar power This despite the fact that solar systems do not use traditional 12 volt car batteries.

Try http://www.pluginamerica.org,/ it will be a good place to start.

I don't know a website, just that they're terrible on the environment. The batteries are super toxic, worse than regular cars. Every time you go over I think 20 or 50km the engine has to start up so that's bad on gas and the engine itself, needing more parts. There's more but I'm drawing a blank today.
