How do i get files off of a hard drive?

Hiya! So.. I have a gateway laptop that has windows vista on it. The gateway laptop is no longer working. I dont know whats wrong with it but thats besides the point. So I already have a external hard drive and im going to pull the files off using my desktop computer. Heres the prob tho. I have 2 accounts on the broken gateway laptop. One account is password protected and one account is not. I have really important files on the password protected account. I have read on the internet that people have not been able to get files off of password protected files. (they always get them off in the in end with help from forums on the web) but can someone tell me how i would get files off of a hard drive that is password protected?

Please!! These files are more important than you know!

One last question! I bought a new charger from ebay and i just got it today and i pluged the charger in and it sparked. it sparked where the hole is on the laptop. you know the input. Could that have broken the laptop completely? could it have damaged the hard drive?

It could have done damage. Always read carefully the power rating plate on these and be certain it matches the spec for the machine. to get files from the old drive you need the machine to be running, or you need to put the disk in an external housing on another machine. You may need to take ownership of the whole drive form the advanced security section of its' properties to recover all the files. Password protected files as such rather than those on an account with a password can be unrecoverable as they can be encrypted.

If Kunal's option doesn't work try Jose's and the safe-mode option. This is a common Vista problem when certain files are stored on what Vista believes is a critical system folder. The only way I have found to get around it is to use safe-mode to move the files into a 'non-system' folder such as one created on your desktop or your documents folder.

Go to ebay buy an adapter for hard drives and pull the drive and then you can plug the usb into your computer with the hard drive on the adapter and then copy your data over, its like 8 bux
