Going on the Norwegian Gem for the holidays, would like to hear from previous cruisers?

The main dining rooms, Magenta and Grand Pacific, offer a children's menu with things like chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, pizza, hot dogs and fries. If your 17 year old is a bit more adventurous I'm sure he/she could handle the steak, pasta dishes, lamb etc. There is no charge to eat in the dining rooms.

Of the specialty restaurants, which you have to pay for (between $10 and $25 per person), the Orchid Garden Asian Restaurant and Tequila Tapas do amazing food which even kids can enjoy.

The 24-hour Blue Lagoon offers burgers, chicken wings, fries etc but also does nice soups and meals for mom and dad! And there's always the Garden Cafe, which is a buffet area and includes a kids' cafe - so everyone can grab what they want from a selection of hot meals, salads, and desserts. Blue Lagoon and the Garden are also free.

I recommend sending your teenager to the teen club on the first night and your 3 year old to the kids club on the first day (after a good night's sleep, less likely to be upset at leaving you!) It's the best way for the 17 year old to meet other teens to hang out with, and the kids' club will keep your 3 year old occupied and entertained for as much or as little of the cruise as you want. And these are also free services!
