    Work done by the spring is a negative quantity since the spring force is acting in the opposite direction of the spring displacement.

    So work done by spring = - elastic potential energy stored (assume Hooke's law applies over this range)

    = - ½ x 48 x 0.5^2

    = - 6.0 J
