what is this bright object in the sky?

im in the united states, eastern standard time zone. the moon is nowhere in sight and there are two objects dominating the night sky. one is nearly overhead but a little bit northeast and i suspect it might be venus but the other one is extremely large and bright that is to the southeast. i have no clue what it could be, any ideas? its about 6:15pm here.

Your directions don't make any sense at all...are you sure about them? Quite a few cities and towns have arbitrarily designated streets as running east and west, and north and south, when they are nowhere near these directions. You can tell north from Polaris or west from approximately where the Sun sets, more southwest at this time of year.

Currently the two brightest objects in the evening sky (just after sunset) are Venus low in the southwest and Jupiter half way between horizon and zenith, but in the southeast.Where I live, the Moon, just past Full, has just risen in the Northeast.

I am also in the eastern time zone and the moon has risen northeast about 4 fingers above the horizon.

    The one overhead is Jupiter.

Aldebaran is in the southeast, or Betelgeuse is just rising, closer to the moon.

Sorry guys, Venus is setting in the west.

Venus is visible in the southwest after the Sun sets, it sets fairly soon after the Sun does. Jupiter is visible in the south southeast and after Venus is the brightest object in the night sky. The bright star Capella is visible in the northeast.

Jupiter is high in the south east and Venus is low in the south west. These are the two brightest objects you can see, but your directions aren't quite right.
