Can I clean my glass top stove this way?
We have a white glass top -- big mistake. We've tried all the usual methods to keep it clean: CeramBryte, razor, elbow grease. My wife tried oven cleaner yesterday and it worked like a charm -- 30 minutes, a quick wipe up & it looked brand new. Which is exactly why I am concerned. I have to think there's a reason everyone doesn't use this method, since it works so much better than the other ways! Is this harmful to the surface?
Thanks @Dan. I suspect you are right. My specific concern is that when we got the stove, the salesman explained that there was a special conditioner that protected the surface, and we had to only use special cleaners that either didn't strip that off, or replenished it. That sounds ridiculous to me, since glass isn't porous, but I'm not an expert.

They probably don't want you to use oven cleaner because it works so much better than the "special" cleaners that they manufacture specifically for glass top stoves - profit motivation. Oven cleaners will work on the enameled surfaces of the oven without damage, so I would think that cleaning the glass top would work just as well or maybe even better.
This site recommends you use "fume-free" brands so you don't get asphyxiated.

I'm sure you can find other sites that recommend using oven cleaner and also sites that caution you against using oven cleaner.
