Need help identifying the problem with my car?

I've been having a problem where I go to start my car ('93 Nissan Altima) and the only thing that happens is all the lights on the dash come on. After I take off the E-brake and shift the transmission it starts up. Today while sitting at a stoplight my car got quiet and cut out. I sat there for about 10 minutes trying to restart it with no success. After about 15 minutes it started back up. Would this be the alternator, fuel pump, or something else? Thanks.

Update:

The car has an automatic transmission.

the coil can do that if it gets too hot. if it still cranks over once it shuts down then it,s not the alternator. turn the key on and listen to hear the fuel pump kick on. if it kicks on then it,s not the pump. if you can,t hear the pump check the pump relay and the fuse.

sounds like a neutral safty switch. The car will only start with the tranny on neutral or with the clutch pushed in. If the switch is bad, it thinks its in gear and clutch out.
