First of all, this is passive! Ahhhh! The horror! Haha! What benefits George and Lennie? Their relationship! So, George and Lennie's relationship benefits them. To me, this still sounds sort of awkward. I would change it to something more like: George and Lennie are better off together in their relationship rather than apart.
