Is it normal to not really have a baby bump after 16 weeks?

I'm rather short (5'3"), and I'm over 17 weeks pregnant. Most people still comment that I don't look pregnant. I started out average weight--and I've gained about 7-8lbs. Every time I go to prenatal appointments, they can never find a heartbeat, because apparently my abdominal aorta is so loud it drowns out the baby's heart--so I've had 3 ultrasounds already, when I was only supposed to have 1 this far along. Anyway, so people telling me I don't look like I'm pregnant, and high stress doctor visits, because they can't seem to find the heartbeat ever, is leaving me a bit paranoid. I'll be going back for my 20 week check up in the beginning of January--and I'm a little nervous now. All my U/S have been textbook--I have no symptoms of miscarriage (I've had one in the past)--but I still can't help to feel like my baby isn't growing or something--anyone else feel this way--or have the same issues? I figured since I'm short, I'd pop out way sooner--where on earth is the baby hiding!?? LOL

I haven't had any personal experience with that but my best friend was like that. Until about 7 1/2 to 8 months pregnant she didn't show at all! (Other than a slight baby bump to the degree that people probably just though she ate to much at the previous meal). Once the baby did start showing her stomach popped out tot he size it was supposed to be. I'm not sure why this happens other than the mother's build. It could possibly be that your baby is sitting more towards your back instead of your stomach. That's what the doctor told her at her appointments. And then once the baby ran out of room back there she started showing. Many women carry there babies 'in their back' (as I have heard it called) so it's perfectly normal. Just wait a few more weeks and you will be able to feel the baby moving around and kicking you, and then there will be no doubt that there is a baby inside you! As long as you aren't having any signs of miscarriage your fine! Think about it this way not showing right now = less time that you have to have random people walk up to you and touch your belly. I am 22 weeks along and random women will walk up to me and ask me when I'm due, if it's a girl or boy, how far along I am, then smile and say "awe how sweet, congratulations" and then walk off. Talk about awkwardness! Hope this helped some! Congratulations!

I was the only one who could really see any difference until about 23 weeks. Even then you'd only know if you knew me well. Now it's pretty unavoidable at almost 29 weeks, but even a couple weeks ago it wasn't 100% obvious. Don't worry. Everyone shows a bit differently. You'll feel better once you can really feel the baby moving around more often and you won't be so paranoid that something's wrong. I'm enjoying pregnancy a lot more now that I'm not so worried all the time because I can feel her kicking.

Edit: Cammie's answer made me laugh. I'm paranoid about going out in public now because I hate it when strangers touch me. I'm fine with friends who ask if they can touch the belly, but the thought of random people coming up to me in stores freak me out.

Don't worry! I did not start showing until 30 weeks with both of my kids and I am about the same build as you and both girls were healthy.
